Student Trainee/Internship Economist (hybrid)

Summary

The Bureau of Labor Statistics measures labor market activity, working conditions, price changes, and productivity in the U.S. economy to support public and private decision making.

Duties

Interns will work with higher graded technical and professional staff in support of office programs and activities to gain practical work experience that augments training in an academic course of study. Positions are outside the bargaining unit, and assignments are designed to provide orientation, training, and familiarization with the work processes of BLS. Typical duties include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Performs a variety of routine data collection interviews designed to provide experience and familiarization with BLS survey methods, practices and programs.
  • Makes follow-up contacts to respondents for small enterprises who provide limited data by mail, telephone, or fax to ensure accurate and timely survey results.
  • Prepares end of survey reports, which provide a synopsis of collection experiences.
  • Assists in miscellaneous office duties (i.e., filing, typing, answering phones, etc.) as necessary.
