DC Elementary School Program Intern

Position: DC Elementary School Program Intern
Location: Washington, DC
 
Asian American LEAD Youth Leadership Empowerment and Development (AALEAD) is a youth development organization. Our mission is to support low-income and underserved Asian Pacific American youth with educational empowerment, identity development, and leadership opportunities through after school, summer, and mentoring programs. The AALEAD DC Elementary School Program Intern will assist in the implementation of AALEAD's DC Elementary School Program and operations. This program serves a diverse group of immigrant youth from Kindergarten to 5th grade. The intern will report to the AALEAD DC Elementary School Program Coordinator. Please note: this is an unpaid position, weekly travel stipend offered.
 
Duration
This internship will start as soon as possible pending mutual availability and will end in late April 2020 pending further discussion.  

Location
  • DC Office Administrative Site: 5518 Connecticut Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20015
  • After School Program Site: Bancroft Elementary School, 1755 Newton ST NW, Washington, DC 20010
  • Both locations are accessible by metro and bus.

Time Commitment
  • Flexible Monday – Friday schedule with a minimum of 15 hours per week.
  • After school programs run from 3:30-6pm. Intern must be available to work at least three days a week during program time on site (preferably Monday, Tuesday and Friday).
  • Intern also must be available to work at least two days a week for administrative work before supporting programs (preferably Monday and Tuesday) starting around 12pm.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support AALEAD staff in creating a safe environment for students to learn and be themselves
  • Assist youth enrolled in dual language English/Spanish program with homework
  • Support teachers with classroom behavior and student engagement
  • Develop a workshop and/or plan an event addressing youth interests 
  • Attend relevant meetings with designated program staff
  • Perform administrative tasks (i.e., recording attendance, creating and sorting files, making copies, etc.) 
  • Support the DC Elementary School Programs team with additional tasks as needed
  • Deliver a culminating presentation and reflection on their AALEAD internship experience

Qualifications
  • Direct experience working with youth
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Sensitivity to the needs of refugee and immigrant children and families
  • Organized with attention to detail and strong ability to multitask and work independently
  • Commitment to positive youth development
  • Conversational written and verbal skills or fluency in Spanish preferred
