GSAC Anti-Racism Internship

Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Context:

Staff members of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) are represented by the Global Staff Association (GSA). The GSA aims to safeguard the collective and individual rights and interests of IOM staff members globally, promote their welfare, resolve issues arising between IOM staff members and the Administration, and advocate with the Administration for changes that will benefit IOM staff members and the Organisation as a whole. In 2017, IOM created the Global Staff Association Committee (GSAC) to replace the Staff Association Committee in Geneva and to act as the executive body of the GSA. GSAC members were elected in 2018.

Through this internship, GSAC seeks to contribute towards raising awareness on and address the issues of institutional racism and discrimination in the workplace.

Under the overall supervision of the GSAC Chairperson and the direct supervision of the GSAC Associate Programme Officer, and in collaboration with other GSAC members, the successful candidate will be responsible and accountable for supporting the development and implementation of GSAC’s anti-racism strategy.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

Support the planning and initial implementation phase of the GSAC anti-racism plan to raise awareness on the issues of racism and discrimination in the workplace through the areas of focus listed below.

I. Strategy/Policy
 
1.    Assist in the drafting of a strategy to guide GSAC’s efforts to address institutional racism and discrimination.
2.    Assist with the planning, development, and implementation of GSAC’s anti-racism vision and activities in accordance with the strategy.

II. Communications
 
3.    Prepare information, draft scripts, and develop other communications materials to raise awareness on GSAC’s anti-racism strategy and other activities.
4.    Support the development of videos on recent and upcoming anti-racism activities.
5.    Plan a series of documentary-style video testimonials.
6.    Support the planning of a global speaker series on racism, including making logistical arrangements and coordinating the events.
7.    Compile and consolidate information and documentation on anti-racism activities for the GSAC section of the Intranet Portal, SharePoint, and the GSAC News Digest.
8.    Assist in the set-up of a dedicated Intranet Portal section where staff can find resources on anti-racism and stay up to date with the latest activities being carried out at IOM.
9.    Facilitate and participate in global and regional events, including webinars, town halls, book clubs, and film screenings on racism and discrimination.

III. Research
 
10. Research books on anti-racism, discrimination, prejudice, and related topics to be added to the GSAC virtual library.
11. Conduct desk research and gather information to support the anti-racism consultant’s work.
12. Explore avenues for addressing the intersectionality of racism and a range of other forms of discrimination, including along the lines of gender, sexual orientation, and disability, among others.
 
IV. Liaison

13. Liaise with other staff associations on their work on racism and discrimination in the workplace.
14. Regularly liaise with anti-racism working groups in IOM offices and helping plan and coordinate upcoming activities with GSAC.
15. Support the creation of a network of anti-racism champions and coordinate activities with them.

V.  Trainings

16. Provide support for planning any upcoming anti-racism, anti-bias, and related trainings in collaboration with the Diversity and Inclusion Officer and LGBTIQ+ focal point.
VI. Other

17. Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Learning Objectives

The intern will build skills in desk research, communications and outreach, as well as advocacy. The intern will also gain experience working for a global staff association in an international organisation and acquire knowledge on topics of interest to staff.

There will be regular meetings held with the GSAC Chairperson, GSAC Associate Programme Officer, and GSAC Bureau to discuss the outputs and ensure that they are completed to the satisfaction of GSAC.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

Currently pursuing or recently completed a university degree in African Studies, African American Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, and/or Human Rights or any related Social Science field from an accredited academic institution.

Experience

No specific experience is required for this position; however, previous experience in anti-racism movements and/or activities as well as with communications and liaison in an international setting would be an advantage.

Other
In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:
 
a) Have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;
 
b)    Are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations
and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or
 
c)    Are sponsored by governmental/non-governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
 
d)  Are either students approaching the end of their studies and preparing a thesis, or recently graduated, who have less than two years of relevant working experience.
 
e) Are between 20 and 36 years of age.

·      Depending on experience and location, IOM provides a small monthly stipend to help offset costs.
·      Please consider the cost of living in Geneva prior to applying. GSAC will cover flight and accommodation costs should the intern’s presence be required at IOM Headquarters in Geneva.
