Position Title: Partnerships and Philanthropy Intern

NPS Unit Name: Washington Support Office, National Park Service – Washington, DC

Position Dates: October 1, 2020 – October 1, 2021

Position Description: Duty stationed in the Office of Partnerships and Philanthropic Stewardship, this intern will work within the team to help program and project managers and parks stay within compliance with generally accepted accounting and auditing principles, as well as the Code of Federal Regulations, Department of the Interior, and National Park Service (NPS) policy. The Office of Partnerships and Philanthropic Stewardship supports the NPS and its partners in creating, enhancing, and recognizing effective partnerships through training, collaboration, communication, and policy leadership and encourages partnerships to achieve greater citizen engagement in NPS programs and activities. 

The selected intern will work for the Office of Partnerships, and Philanthropic Stewardship team leads in support of the NPS Partnership policy, programs, projects, and activities. The intern will conduct vetting of proposed philanthropic donations, gifts, and cause marketing campaigns as outlined in the policy.

We will expose the young person to leadership opportunities where they will be exposed to critical and creative thinking as well as verbal and written communication opportunities, both planned and impromptu. As part of the Washington Support Office, the internship exposes interns to the entire depth and breadth of the National Park System (over 400 sites and a myriad of programs) as well as collaborative work alongside and with the National Park Foundation, the official charitable partners of the NPS.

Project areas may include a variety of knowledge and experience related to NPS work with the public, private, partnerships, and Partnership Office work in promoting and managing partnerships in conjunction with Regional Offices, parks, and programs. Because all sectors, including private, public, and non-profit sectors, forge an array of partnership relationships to carry out their mission, goals, and work; the knowledge and experience students gain through this internship will apply to most professions. Duties will include:
  • Provide research, administrative, and analytical support for employees engaged in updating reference guide (policy support documentation) relating to partnerships, fundraising, donations, and intellectual property.
  • Support the development of policies and respond to requests around the use of NPS intellectual Property. Provide support to the Brand Management Team and NPS Arrowhead Review Team.
  • Assist in writing summary reports to management after reviews (especially donor vetting), including their conclusion and any recommendations.
  • Edit and/or draft letters, memos, and briefing statements.
  • Support DOI and NPS public, private, partnerships reporting requirements.   
  • Support the NPS non-profit reporting program. Enter data, perform data analysis based on audited financial statements and IRS 990 submissions, create spreadsheets, and be responsible for creating and maintaining a file system within the Partnership Portal that creates easy access to dated records.

Learning Goals: The intern should learn to develop remote work abilities in a virtual team setting as well as complete tasks independently with little supervision. The intern will be assessed on their ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Through the work in the Office of Partnerships and Philanthropic Stewardship, the intern will learn the laws and regulations associated with federal government philanthropic partners. 

Qualifications: Intern must have matriculated into a business curriculum or programs such as Business Management, Accounting, Auditing, General Business, Finance, Nonprofit Management, Philanthropic Studies, Public Administration/Policy, Business Communications, and Digital Media, Marketing, Pre-law, or Ethics

Additional qualifications:
  • Must be between 18 and 35 years of age
  • Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or U.S. national
  • Must be able to pass a federal background check

Work Environment: This a sedentary work environment where the interns will be paired with professionals in the partnerships and philanthropic stewardship world. The interns will be exposed to database systems that are akin to many in the non-profit sector and other government agencies.

Vehicle/License Requirement: A personal vehicle is not required for this site. A valid state driver's license is not required; however, should there be a need to operate a government vehicle while conducting official government business, then a valid state driver's license would be required.

Compensation and Benefits
  • Compensation is at a rate of $15 per hour, 40 hours per week.
