Health Policy Intern

The Global Liver Institute (GLI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based out of Washington, D.C. Our mission is to improve the lives of individuals and families impacted by liver disease through promoting innovation, encouraging collaboration, and scaling optimal approaches to help eradicate liver diseases. We believe that collaborating with the medical and advocacy communities, and partners worldwide, we will achieve our vision for liver health to take its proper place on the global public health agenda consistent with its prevalence and impact.

Responsibilities:
  • Reporting to the Director of Policy, the Policy Intern is responsible for providing cross functional support to the entire policy team. 
  • They will learn to work with congressional, regulatory, CMS, and HHS staff on healthcare policy that supports GLI initiatives. 
  • They will assist with international, state and federal projects. 
  • They will promote patient access; represent GLI at outside events establishing key contacts; develop resources and materials to support patient centric positions; track and analyze effects of state and federal legislation and regulation; collaborate with internal/external stakeholders to ensure that the liver disease patient voice is considered in all coverage and cost effectiveness evaluations.
  • They will work with regulatory agencies to develop Patient Focused Drug Development events on liver health leading to the development of logical patient centric drug development processes.
  • They will also coordinate on site meetings, create meeting agendas, and take meeting minutes for relevant policy engagements. They will conduct legislative research; attend congressional hearings, and develop meeting and hearing summaries/memos.
  • They will also lead the consistent monthly production of GLI Liver Health Policy Updates.

Candidate Specification:
  • Candidates should be working on earning a bachelors or masters progressing towards a degree in public health, health policy, public policy, health administration, or public administration.
  • An understanding of commercial market access, the intersection of federal and state policies on commercial markets, and the influence of commercial trends in healthcare payment and delivery on public payers.
  • Knowledge of the federal and state regulatory processes, federal and state regulatory bodies that monitor and implement the health programs, healthcare policy development, and the administrative structure of funding sources for government agencies.
Specifications continued: 
  • Fluency in Microsoft and Google Applications 
  • Passion for nonprofits and health advocacy
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with individuals from cultural and diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent team player with the ability to work independently and in collaboration with colleagues at all levels across the team and with external stakeholders
  • Superior organization and leadership abilities
