Underwriting Internship

CareFirst runs a year-round internship program. The ideal candidate is someone who can commit to work throughout the year – part-time up to 15-20 hours in the Spring/Fall AND full-time 40 hours in the summer.

This internship position is responsible for assisting Underwriters with the attainment, effective management, and profitability of a designated book of business. This position teaches an intern the basics of underwriting. You will have the opportunity to apply what you have learned in school within a business environment. This opportunity will allow you to develop valuable connections and relationships while working across multiple levels of management within different areas of the organization. Here are some examples of you will be exposed to in this opportunity:  

  • Gather data from different sources (Internal/External & Qualitative/Quantitative)
  • Use your analytical skills to present findings (pivot tables, visualizations, narrative summaries)
  • Within standard turnaround times, evaluate competitor offerings and develop new business quotes and rates
  • Assess value and performance of existing business relationships and vendor contracts
  • Evaluate performance and help suggest changes to current product & pricing strategies
  • Work on special projects within the Underwriting team to further efficiencies and processes
  • Assist in the efforts to quantify and summarize impact of specific projects to the company
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
  • This position requires an individual working towards a bachelor’s level degree from an accredited college/university in their Junior or Senior year
  • GPA 3.25 or above
  • We are looking for students seeking degrees in: Business Administration, Math/Economics, Finance or related degrees and individuals with strong math aptitude
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, negotiation, and organizations skills
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team environment to accomplish assigned tasks with a positive attitude
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Access)
  • Ability to interface with and establish/maintain effective working relationships with internal staff/departments
