Fall 21 Press Intern

Civic Nation is currently seeking a Press intern for its Communications department. The intern, reporting to the Director of Strategic Communications, will play an essential role in supporting communications strategies for Civic Nation. This is an exciting position for someone who is eager to grow and learn, comfortable in a fast-paced environment, interested in more writing and media experience, and interested in driving real, meaningful change by shifting culture, systems, and policy.

ABOUT THE COMMUNICATIONS TEAM
The Communications team manages all external-facing communications for Civic Nation and its initiatives. This includes developing communications strategy and messaging, building relationships with media, placing stories, press releases, op-eds, and talking points.

YOUR IMPACT
  • Monitoring traditional media for news stories and industry trends by compiling and distributing daily press clips
  • Draft media advisories, press releases, and talking points
  • Develop and maintain press lists
  • Identify media and thought leadership opportunities for Civic Nation leadership
  • Assist in developing press events and moments
  • Provide support to initiative teams on communications
  • Assist with administrative tasks for the department team, which includes: capturing meeting notes, preparing materials, and assisting with presentations

YOUR EXPERIENCE 
  • Excellent analytical, writing, and communication skills
  • A track record of getting results in a fast-paced professional environment
  • Strong interest in the news/media landscape
  • A passion for civic engagement and social justice
  • Previous communications experience, volunteer or paid, preferred

YOUR COMPETENCIES 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Help us reach our target audiences, ask questions when needed, and pay close attention to detail
  • Proficiency in work tools. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook as well as Google Suit, including Google Calendar, Google docs, and Google Sheets. Meltwater and MailChimp are a plus
  • Self-motivated and creative. Take initiative when you see gaps, share creative ideas, and reach out when you want to jump in on a new project
  • Adaptable and organized. Comfort in a rapidly changing environment and demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities at any given time.
  • Research and willingness to learn. Completed detailed research that supports our team in effectively communicating with the public
  • Trustworthy and reliable. Demonstrate strong time management skills and the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality
  • A strong ability to listen, understand, connect, earn trust of, and collaborate with employees at all levels of the organization and across diverse backgrounds

COMPENSATION & EXPECTED HOURS
This is a part-time, three-month-long commitment commencing September 8, 2021, and ending December 10, 2021. Interns are expected to work up to 20-hours each week and will be compensated at the rate of $15.20 per hour.
