HBCU Scholars Program

POSITION
Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) are known for being stellar institutions with long histories of academic excellence, intellectual rigor, cultural dexterity, societal impact and for producing generations of influential leaders. As a global asset management firm, Wellington Management is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Wellington HBCU Scholars Program consists of a merit-based scholarship award granted annually to students. Our scholarship awardees will have two internship opportunities following their sophomore and junior year.

The multi-pronged Wellington HBCU Scholars Program will consist of

  • Up to a $15,000 renewable annual merit-based scholarship which will be applied to junior and senior year tuition
  • Two paid summer internships after the Scholars’ sophomore and junior years commencing in July 2022
  • Opportunities to participate in campus events, student case competitions, peer mentoring and sponsorship with a Wellington leader

The Wellington HBCU Scholars Program is open to full-time students who are sophomores and/or juniors majoring in Business, Economics, Finance, Accounting, Technology, Liberal Arts and STEM programs. Wellington HBCU Scholars are also eligible for the firm’s student housing stipend of $5,000 to help offset the costs of travel and room and board during their internship.
Once applications are reviewed, selected students will be scheduled for an informational interview with a member of Wellington’s HBCU Steering Group, and an internship interview with a hiring manager and their respective team. Interviews will commence the week of October 4th, 2021 and awards will be announced on November 12th, 2021.

Wellington HBCU Scholars Program Eligibility
Initial Eligibility

  • Currently enrolled full time in an undergraduate degree program offered by an accredited HBCU  
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 and meets academic progress standards as defined by the institution  
  • A U.S. legal resident, citizen, or eligible non-citizen under Federal Title IV regulations  
  • Student receiving full tuition funding through other sources, will be ineligible for scholarship funds, however they are eligible to apply for a Wellington internship  
  • Earns at least a “meets expectations” rating at the conclusion of the 10-12-week summer internships 

Continued Eligibility

  • Minimum grade point average (GPA) required is 3.0 to remain in the Wellington Scholars’ Program.

  • If the scholar's GPA is less than 3.0 at the end of any semester, the scholar will be placed on a one-semester probation.
  • If the scholar does not bring his/her GPA above 2.8 during the probation period, the student will be removed from the Wellington Scholar’s Program and the scholarship will be terminated. 
  • During internship each scholar must abide by Wellington’s code of conduct, ethics, and all other policies/procedures.
  • Applicants must be available to work a minimum of two 10 to 12-week summer internships at one of our US offices. The internship will start after completion of sophomore and/or junior year (juniors who apply in the fall of 2021 and are selected will complete one summer internship in the summer of 2022 prior to their senior academic year).

Internship Areas


Business Internship

Client Group - Chicago
The internship within the Client Group’s Chicago team affords a unique opportunity for those individuals who are passionate about and are seeking to embark on a career in investment management in a client-facing role. The Client Group (CG) is dedicated to providing high quality service and investment solutions to all of Wellington Management’s clients, prospects, and consultants. The internship role will provide broad exposure to a variety of client channels, investment content, and global asset classes. Within the Client Group, the Chicago summer intern’s responsibilities may include, Analyzing potential opportunities for new business within a geographic region or channel, Assisting with business analytics and competitive analysis, Engaging with Wellington’s evolving technologies and client related applications, Attending various internal cross functional meetings, Collaborating with members of the Client Group to support external relationships with clients, prospects, and consultants and Working on ad-hoc projects to support our overall client efforts.

Client Platform – Management and Analytics
The Client Platform Management and Analytics team has centralized business management and analytics responsibilities that span the Client Platform (which includes two departments – the Client Group and Investment Product and Fund Strategies). The intern role within this team is well suited for someone who is seeking to learn about the investment industry broadly and wants to build business management, project management, and analytical skills. The ideal candidate will be intellectually curious, a hard-worker, team player, and an analytical problem solver with the capacity to leverage systems and technology. Specific responsibilities may include, Develop detailed and in-depth knowledge of Wellington’s evolving technologies and client-related applications, Evaluate Salesforce reporting dashboards by engaging with members of the Client Platform to get feedback, summarizing findings, and proposing enhancements, Draft a project plan/business requirement to solve for an identified business need, Work on ad-hoc projects to support our training and knowledge management efforts and Attend various internal cross functional meetings.

Client Group – US Financial Intermediaries Group
The internship within the Client Group’s US Financial Intermediaries team affords a unique opportunity for those individuals who are passionate about and are seeking to embark on a career in investment management in a client-facing role. The Client Group (CG) is dedicated to providing high quality service and investment solutions to all of Wellington Management’s clients, prospects, and consultants. The internship role will provide exposure to a variety of prospects and clients within the financial intermediaries channel, investment content, and global asset classes. Within the Client Group, the summer intern’s responsibilities may include, Analyzing potential opportunities for new business within a geographic region or channel, Assisting with business analytics and competitive analysis, Engaging with Wellington’s evolving technologies and client related applications, Collaborating with members of the Client Group to support external relationships with clients, prospects, and consultants and Working on ad-hoc projects to support our overall client efforts.

Financial Operations and Analysis
The Financial Operations and Analysis intern will support the Revenue, Client Invoicing, and Incentive Compensation teams within Finance. Responsibilities will include assisting with the semi-annual incentive compensation payment, using spreadsheets to create and maintain internal models, and working on special projects across the teams. The position will require the intern to work in close collaboration with other members of Finance and to support various areas of the firm including the Global Relationship Group, Investment Management and many of our management and oversight Committees. The position will provide the intern with the opportunity to improve upon their quantitative and communication skills.

Global Accounting                                                                                                                               
The Global Accounting team is primarily responsible for the firm’s legal entity consolidated results including the intercompany and elimination processes. The team handles the accounting, under United States and international generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) for non-compensation related matters and for accruals and prepaid expenses, fixed assets and related account analysis and reconciliations. It serves as the business owner for the Workday general ledger and asset management applications. The team is responsible for multi‐GAAP accounting for the non-US subsidiaries. In addition, the team is responsible for regulatory reporting for the non‐US and US affiliates including managing the capital requirements for the US and non-US subsidiaries and staying abreast of changes to regulations. The team also supports management in the annual budget and quarterly forecast process as well as preparing, presenting, and assisting in analysis to senior management. The team provides oversight in the distribution of monthly financial results and leads the independent audits of WMG and its US and non‐US subsidiaries. The team interacts on various topics with senior management and works closely with other areas such as Global Tax, Legal and Compliance, and other areas in Finance and Administration such Treasury, Accounts Payable, Revenue, Compensation Accounting, etc.

Global Operational Risk Management
The Operational Risk Management team is based in our Legal & Compliance group. The team is comprised of Operational Risk Management, Internal Audit, Enterprise Sourcing, and Corporate Travel. The Risk Services intern will contribute to the completion of projects and conduct analysis and reporting. The intern will be responsible for many tasks such as tagging and analyzing of key risk management metrics, developing contract profiles of vendors, assisting with due diligence process for new and critical vendors, and testing of control design and effectiveness

Global Tax Services
Global Tax Services provides expertise on a range of investment tax matters across the Wellington organization and to clients. Through the structured onshore and offshore Sponsored Products, interns can expect to gain a practical foundation of the global financial system, structured investment vehicles and of course, the taxation of financial products. These products are global in scope and comprise all asset classes from domestic and international equities to various fixed income securities and derivatives including swaps, currency, futures and forwards. The intern will assist with many tasks such as researching and reporting of non-US bank and security accounts, conducting tax research, communicating with operations and client services colleagues, reconciling global custodian income reporting and many others.

Global Trading –Trade Operations
The Trade Operations intern will support the firm’s domestic and international post-execution trade activities. The intern will gain valuable expertise in international trading and settlement practices associated with today’s global financial markets. Additionally, the intern will develop communication skills through interaction with Fixed Income and Equity traders, brokers, custodian bank representatives and other individuals located in offices throughout the world. The individual will also gain proficiencies in industry applications such as ALERT, CTM, and Bloomberg.

Global Trading –Trade Coordination
The Trade Coordination intern will support the firm’s domestic and international post-execution trade activities. The intern will gain valuable expertise in international trading and settlement practices associated with today’s global financial markets.  Additionally, the intern will develop communication skills through interaction with Fixed Income and Equity traders, brokers, custodian bank representatives and other individuals located in offices throughout the world. The individual will also gain proficiencies in industry applications such as ALERT, CTM, and Bloomberg.

US Compliance
The Compliance intern will support the group’s evolving compliance programs, including Funds Compliance, Testing & Forensics, and Core Compliance, working on strategic projects with various teams throughout the summer. Among other tasks, the intern will be responsible for evaluating data using various data analytics tools, creating compliance solutions for new and ongoing processes, and leading ad-hoc initiatives for the Compliance group. Interns will be encouraged to develop a diverse skill set, including project management, presentation skills, knowledge of software and applications as applicable. The successful candidate will gain proficiencies in regulatory requirements of regimes applicable to a US investment adviser, experience relating to the core compliance responsibilities of a large global firm, and insight into the asset management business generally.


Early Career Investor Internship

Investment Research
As an Early Career Investor (ECI) intern, you will assist seasoned investors in conducting independent investment research while gaining in-depth exposure to the investment industry and our firm.
There are five primary components to the summer internship experience: (1) project for an investment team, (2) exposure to Investment Science (3) access to investors and business leaders across the firm to better understand our firm and its culture, (4) in-depth exposure to the investment industry, and (5) feedback and mentorship.
 
Projects are sourced from multiple areas on the Investment Platform, which includes the Investment Research, Investment Boutiques, Investment Science, and Investment Strategy groups. The origin and nature of the work will be based on the analytical needs of our investors and will mimic the work of our full-time Research Associates (the post-undergraduate investment role at Wellington). At the end of the summer, you will be given an opportunity to share and present your work, in a small group forum.
 
Examples of previous projects include:
·       Analyzing government spending data to gain insights into the revenue for large government vendors
·       Assessing CEO compensation to understand if a CEO is paid too much relative to peers.
·       Creating a dashboard to display COVID-19 consumer spending data


Investment Science

The Investment Science group seeks curious, analytical minds to participate in data science research internships supporting the firm’s community of investors. Investment Science Associate interns will provide quantitative research to the firm’s talented community of investors, pursuing projects from idea generation and prototyping, to validation and production. You will be immersed in complex data sets, faced with compelling investment challenges and encouraged to solve problems through the use of innovative techniques.

Over the course of 10 to 12 weeks, you will have the opportunity to:

Investment Services & Technology (InvesTech) Internship

InvesTech interns will work within the global Investment Services and Technology (InvesTech) division. Interns will develop the foundation to become successful in a career in financial operations and technology. Interns will be exposed to technologies and processes used and applied in the financial services sector – specifically in asset management. Opportunities exist for those interested in analysis, data, software engineering, operations, and business.

Interns will develop and deepen their analytical and technological skillset throughout the summer. Subject matter experts will conduct trainings throughout the summer on internal applications and programs such as Python and Tableau. These trainings will help to develop the skills required for the internship, and a potential career in operations, technology, and investment management. Interns will also have the opportunity to shadow technology professionals as they work hand-in-hand with business partners to solve problems.
