Security Specialist

Major Duties:

GS7
  • Provides physical protection for classified information, personnel, facilities, installations; or other sensitive materials, resources, or processes against criminal, terrorist or hostile intelligence activities.
  • Reviews requests for investigations concerning security clearances, requirements, violations, and assessments.
  • Initiate or perform appropriate indices checks, arrest records checks, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), ELSUR checks, and related checks in order to obtain the most complete and relevant information concerning subject(s) of the investigation, acquaintances, employers, relatives, etc.
  • Review and/or analyze various Bureau investigative files and related materials to identify and extract all possible identifying information, matching records, questionable or overlapping elements, and other areas of investigative consideration, which could have a bearing on an individual's reliability, trustworthiness, and loyalty.
  • Prepares written analyses of information developed, supporting analysis, and recommendations to initiate further investigations and/or provide any additional (security) concerns.
  • Prepares outgoing communications to FBIHQ to transmit recommendations, supporting analysis, and data.

GS9
In Addition to the above duties:
  • Conducts security briefings, which includes Security Awareness Briefings, and Hostile Threat Briefings.
  • Revises security briefings based on the specific issues developed and security requirements.

Qualifications and Evaluations

Specialized Experience (SE):

GS7: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS5 grade level. SE is defined as follows:
  • Knowledge of the indices systems, various record check systems, and file review processes in order to develop and extract accurate information relative to the subject.
  • Knowledge of the basic security administration or a related field.
  • Experience communicating orally and in writing.

GS9: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS7 grade level. SE is defined as follows:
  • Experience in the use of investigative procedures, terminology and requirements to furnish leads, develop information, and ensure the completeness of investigative results and justification for recommendations made.

Education
All degrees must be from an accredited college or university. Education may be substituted for specialized experience as follows:

GS-7: Applicant must have a bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement or one (1) full year of graduate level education. Superior academic achievement is the completion of all the requirements of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, which is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average of 3.0 or higher as recorded on an official transcript, or as based on courses completed during the final two years of the curriculum, or (3) honor society membership.

GS-9: Applicant must have a master’s or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related.
