Mental Health Support Services

Hiring Range: $69,315 - $93,574

Who We Are:
Mental Health Support Services (MHSS) is the provider of mental health, developmental disabilities, and substance use disorder services for children and adults in Chesterfield County. We are currently seeking a Registered Nurse with a desire to make a difference in delivering care in an empathetic and compassionate way!

Minimum Education and Experience:
Diploma from an approved nursing program or an Associate's degree in nursing; bachelor's degree in nursing preferred; two years of experience working as a Registered Nurse; two years of experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Working knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing; of medical terminology; of communicable disease and chronic disease etiology, prevention, and treatment. Ability to evaluate health care and medical service needs; to administer medications and perform skilled nursing services, treatments and procedures; to anticipate patients' needs; to prepare and maintain organized, detailed and accurate medical records and charts; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to operate a personal computer and related software and other standard office equipment; to interact with a variety of people from different cultures and backgrounds and of varying ages; to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.

Additional Requirements 

  • Possess licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse by the Virginia Board of Nursing. 

 

  • Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, records must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.

Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.  

This position is considered Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

 

The successful incumbent will provide nursing services to individuals living in community-based settings such as group homes and apartment clusters with a primary diagnosis of developmental disability.
 
 Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Takes, monitors, and records vital signs; 
  •  Observes, records, and reports symptoms, reactions, and changes in patient’s condition; 
  • Trains staff on medical protocols and treatment for individuals;
  • Teaches approved medication administration course for direct care staff;
  • Prepares and administers prescribed medications, treatments and therapies;
  • Maintains quality medical standards via direct and indirect interventions;
  • Assesses medical needs of residents and recommends appropriate treatment;
  • Inventories, orders, and stocks medications and medical supplies;
  • Educates staff, families, and patients on routine care and prevention procedures; 
  • Maintains medical charts and records; 
  • Participates in an on-call rotation; and
  • Performs other work as required.
