Technology Development Intern

June - August 2018 • Schaumburg, IL

What I liked

I really enjoyed working on a team on our summer project. We were able to do some meaningful work and really impact the role of automation in software design.

What I wish was different

I have no complaints. Other interns, however, felt as if their managers were not organized and did not provide them with enough work for the summer. If you feel this way, contact the TDP program manager ASAP and they will ensure that you have work to do!

Advice

The effort you put into the internship will correlate to how much you gain/benefit from this experience. Go in with a positive attitude and an eagerness to learn. You are given a summer to not only produce meaningful work for the company, but to learn a tremendous amount. Utilize this opportunity to its fullest.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2017 • Eden Prairie, MN

What I liked

Lots of opportunity within Optum and UnitedHealthgroup. These companies are some of the largest in Minnesota and the healthcare industry. They gave me a chance to really get my feet wet with software test automation.

What I wish was different

Sometimes with a big company you can feel over burdened with all the red tape. Lots of rules to jump through just to get simple things done, like installing needed software can be a headache. It would be nicer if the setup process was more streamlined.

Advice

Be friendly and open to other interns. You never know when you will run into them again.

Technology Development Program

June - August 2017 • Boston, MA

What I liked

The working environment was very modern, and collaboration was encouraged. The managers were great to work with, and the projects had the potential to make a difference in the company.

What I wish was different

I was put on a project that was very technical in terms of computer science, despite being assured that I wouldn't be expected to code (I am not a computer science major, nor do I have much experience in the field).

Advice

Make the most of the time you have! It goes by quickly.

TDP Intern

May - August 2018 • Boston, MA

What I liked

Great office, generous pay / benefits, great culture.

What I wish was different

The posting made the position sound more exploratory (presenting an original idea shark tank style) but the tasks were predefined with little wiggle room.

Advice

Take advantage of the events around Boston.

Software Developer Intern

May - August 2018 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I absolutely love the culture at Optum. Although I am a Computer Science and Mathematics major, I am extremely interested in working in the business side of tech - perhaps as a Project Manager. Optum allows me to do just that! You can definitely pave your own path at Optum, and everyone is willing to help you find the right direction for you.

What I wish was different

N/A

Advice

Just try it!

Software Development Intern

May - August 2018 • Eden Prairie, MN

What I liked

The people and the environment were really cool. Everyone was very friendly and helpful.

What I wish was different

Preferences would be taken more into account, as well as managers having a well-thought out plan for the summer instead of wasting time coming up with the details while you're there.

Advice

Your work and experience depends heavily on your manager. Make sure you're getting into something you're passionate about or something that interests you, otherwise your summer will be lackluster.

Technology Development Intern

May - August 2018 • Eden Prairie, MN

What I liked

Fun intern team, great office building and cafeteria, some interesting projects.

What I wish was different

Better hands on interaction with the managers and full time employees. Interns on my team were left it handle themselves too often and there was hardly any interaction with full time employees. I feel like I still don’t know what it would be like to work full time there.

Advice

Be open and talkative at the interviews and you’ll be fine getting an offer. They hire many interns so as long as you present yourself well you’ll likely get an offer.

What I liked

The Full-Timers were so nice and super helpful. They really taught me a lot and was always willing to help with whatever I needed. My team was also a lot of fun so I really enjoyed everyone invlved.

What I wish was different

I wish I would've adapted faster than I did. It took me a few days longer to get into the swing of things than my peers so I always felt behind.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions! You're only hurting yourself and your own progress by not asking for help.

What I liked

What I wish was different

Choice in project. Worked two summers there specifically asked not to do big data. Was told I would be doing robotics then switched to work on the same project from last summer working big data.

Advice

Take chances in leadership roles. Be the scrum master and work it. Consider interns and other full timers as your peers. Try using free time to work on personal pet projects or join clubs with other people in company.
